The presentation will cover spinal fusion and other reimbursement impacting challenges in ICD-10-PCS coding. We will discuss accurate procedural coding, reasons for claims’ denials and appropriate appeals.

Kathy is the Education Services Manager at LexiCode and a subject matter expert in the ICD-9 and ICD-10-CM/PCS Classification systems, MS-DRG and other payment methodologies, anatomy, surgical procedures and disease process for coding. She is an AHIMA FORE Scholarship recipient, a Phi Theta Kappa honors graduate from the CPCC Health Information Technology program in Charlotte, North Carolina, and an honors graduate from the University of Kansas Health Information Management program. During her coding career, she has worked as a coder, consultant, auditor and educator. She is a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), a Clinical Documentation Improvement Practitioner (CDIP), a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), and an AHIMA-Approved ICD-10 CM/PCS Trainer. A teacher before entering the Health Information field, she brings a passion for learning and sharing information about coding.

Kim has over 20 years of experience in the health care industry with multiple hospital clients throughout the country. She has worked as the lead consultant on a number of multi-system hospital engagements on SMART assessments and training, DRG validation, ICD-10 coding education, and documentation improvement in regards to MS-DRGs, APR-DRGs, Case Mix Index and Severity of Illness/Risk of Mortality (SOI/ROM) profiling. Kim provides numerous presentations every year to professional organizations such as North Carolina Health Information Management Association, South Carolina Health Information Management Association, North Carolina Healthcare Financial Management Association, and South Carolina Hospital Association.

Theresa is an Inpatient Coding Auditor at Prisma Health with over 30 years experience in ICD-9 and ICD-10-CM/PCS coding, and is an AHIMA-Approved ICD-10 CM/PCS Trainer. During her career she has worked as a Senior Review Consultant, Quality Improvement Consultant and Program Manager for the Carolinas Center for Medical Excellence, the Quality Improvement Organization for Medicare for over 25 years. She has been an adjunct faculty member at Midlands Technical College, and a member of the Health Information Management Advisory Committee. Theresa has been a long time member of SCHIMA Coding Roundtable, and a veteran of the US Army.
