SCHIMA President’s Message
First, I want to thank all of the members of the South Carolina Health Information Management Association for giving me this opportunity to serve as your President for the 2022-2023 year. I am looking forward to meeting as many of you, or at least talking with as many of you as possible during the year!
We had 58 people attending the SCHIMA meeting in Greenville, SC, which was awesome! I was able to meet many of you at that meeting and see some familiar (I won’t say “old” familiar) faces. I heard people throughout the meeting talking about how nice it was to get to attend the meeting in person and network like we used to do “Pre-Covid”! And it really was!
The meeting went really well! The meals were delicious, the hotel was nice and accommodating, and the vendors that attended were awesome! We also had some great speakers with wonderful presentations that ranged around data analytics, HIM operations, reimbursement, and regulations.
At the Business Meeting luncheon, we acknowledged the 2021-2022 Board of Directors and inducted the new officers. The induction ceremony was really nice. Teri Huss, a Past President did the honors.
Here are your new Board Members!
- Past President: Tiffany Ortiz
- President: Susan Richardson
- President-Elect: Lateka Benson
- Treasurer: Karen Hill
- Secretary: Aleathia Mitchell
- 2nd Year Delegate: Dan Ellison
- 1st Year Delegate: Jason McAlhany
Linda Monusko, our Executive Director, captured my presentation and posted it on the SCHIMA Facebook, so if you want to see and hear that, by all means, please go check it out. Just a heads up-it is over 11 minutes long! And it was not a “polished” speech! The gist of the presentation was that we all have a story about our HIM careers, how we started, where we started, how important it is to network, and how to get out there and still let people know who we are. It starts with “me,” “you,” and then “us.” Let your story be heard and share it with others! Let’s get others excited about HIM!
As members, we really need to get more involved in “our” association. Some of us are “aging” out, so in order to stay “alive,” we need to get others more engaged. By the end of the meeting, we had over 20 people volunteering to get engaged! Almost half of the participants! WOW! Even if you cannot help out in a physical capacity, I am hoping that each and every one of you, will at least, get engaged in other ways, such as responding to our surveys, voting in the SCHIMA and AHIMA elections, and getting in touch with your SCHIMA Board Members with ideas on how to help us retain “Our Legacy-SCHIMA.”
Lastly, I want to thank the past SCHIMA Board for all of the hard work during the 2021-2022 year. Because of their continued efforts, we have so much to be thankful for and so much to look forward to. Please look for more information to come out about how you can get involved, and how we, as HIM professionals, can make more of an impact in our state and national association!
And most of all, please start making plans to attend our upcoming SCHIMA 70th Anniversary in Columbia, SC (2023)!
